And now you know, and knowing is half the battle

I wrote this comment (well, here's the relevant parts worth reposting) on Dr. Helen's blog in response to a troll (yes, I feed them sometimes):

go to a feminist blog. Only there do you see many, many of the women clucking about how it's their God-given right to go to a seedy bar at 2AM, alone, downtown in a big city, get wasted and have no possibility of getting raped, mugged, murdered, etc. We're not talking hypothetical here, which we would all agree to, but rather they simply cannot accept the existence of evil men and women who would do heinous things to them in such a setting.
If a man wrote that he should be able to walk down a poor section of town wearing a high end Rolex, custom-fitted Armani and Gucci, $20,000+ of gold/diamond bling and not get mugged, he'd be lampooned as an abject moron who can't accept reality. Such is the difference that you seem to miss.

If a man ever spoke about social ills theoretical and real that affect men the way that most feminists do about ones that affect women, they'd be humiliated. The reason that bloggers like Vox Day and Dr. Helen rip on women so much is because there is a degree of stupidity and detachment from reality that is tolerated in women by society, that is not tolerated in men. Call it a throwback to the era of the sheltered female protected by the menfolk if you like, but it is real. Obviously, many women are not stupid (Rachel and the women in our families are examples from my own frame of reference). It's just that there is an undeniable tolerance in society for extremely stupid behavior that gets one into serious trouble from women (like that referenced above) that would get a "WTF was he thinking" response from most people if it happened to a man.

I think you're on to something there. If you really want to get the fire going, just add the fact that we tolerate the same kind of detachment from reality in children.

That's a hell of an analogy. I've got to remember that one.

"Women and children can be careless, but not men."

- Don Corleone in The Godfather

I guess this phenomenon isn't really that new.

I wouldn't really have a problem with women acting more irresponsibly than men so long as their legal rights reflected this tendency. We do this with children, after all (age requirements for driving, drinking, entering into contracts, etc.)

The problems arise when a group (such as women) is given all available rights and privileges, but bears less legal responsibility than other groups. Such an arrangement is a feudal caste system with women playing the role of the aristocracy and men the serfs.

Rights and responsibility must go hand in hand; anything else is simply unjust. If women wish to enjoy the same rights as men, the they must bear the same responsibilities.

Triton dude,

That's some ice-cold special reserve pimp shit!

Mix Master Mike spelled it out right. Having lived in and near the "ethnically vibrant" section of Boston, I can tell you that I as a grown man would NOT tread certain areas, at certain times of night, or hell even in the day, for that matter.

When I used to supply to the under-aged I knew, runs to the liquor store ONE BLOCK AWAY had a location hazard fee of five to ten bucks. I wasn't charging that to be a prick, and the kids I bought for more than understood...

I love it. In fact, I think I am going to have to go through your site and create an archive of these wonderful motivators you create!

Btw, is the one in blue on the right supposed to be Amanda Marcotte?

Oh, but he doesn't make them all ;) Some of them he steals :)

Why does that not surprise me....

Just kidding :)

Thanks, Abe. I think that's the most colourful compliment I've ever received. ;)

Alas, I fear there will always be females who "get away with" (or actually are) lacking in survival instincts - in part b/c there will always be some males (father, brothers, husbands) who foster and prefer their women to have such flaws. I have no idea why. Perhaps b/c it makes them think they are more manly? But I have witnessed it a lot in my life; there are simply some people who would rather a woman do stupid things then have her able to properly think (and defend) herself. Case in point, I can't tell you how many males find me (personally) "too intense." Their loss. LOL.

terrymum,

Women usually get into trouble in that area in one of two ways:

1) They don't know when to turn that behavior off.

2) They mistake bitchiness for real strength and wit (in a survival sense).

I agree that some men prefer to keep their women emotionally stunted in that respect. Personally I have no use for such women or their male equivalents. I tend to regard them as little more than human cattle.
