Ron Paul's core point was that religious imagery is inappropriate for a presidential candidate. He was being humble enough to say that the office of the president shouldn't be used for culture wars. He expressed similar sentiments when he rebuked someone for asking him a question about evolution not too long ago.
Yet another reason why he is qualified for the job. The President is Commander-in-Chief, not Theologian-in-Chief or Scientist-in-Chief.
