In this case, the woman who filed the complaint wasn't ignorant, she was just flat out stupid and should have been warned to not file a complaint by the police.
Of course, that's one of the things about busybodies: they're beyond reproach in their own eyes. It obviously never occurred to the woman to apologize for the child's behavior, as a child cannot be expected to understand what the woman was doing and the woman should have been given the benefit of the doubt. In a politer society she would have, anyway.
Incidents like this happen because the English-speaking world has become extremely legalistic as we've grown secular. Everything has to be resolved through official complaints, court trials, etc. The police can't be expected to sort things out on the street by asking the woman what she was doing, seeing the pumped bottle of milk and then going back to the complaining busybody to tell her that her complaint is baseless because the police discovered that no offense had been committed. God help the police if they added further insult to injury by suggesting to the busybody that her child had provoked the entire incident, and that she needs to get a better handle on her spawn.
Breastfeeding Association spokeswoman Tracey Kelly said many people were ignorant about expressing milk. The mother who complained about this behavior is a useless busybody. It seems that one of the few things that the English-speaking world has in common and in abundance are moral busybodies. The incident happened because the complainer's child ran through the curtain which concealed the breast-pumping mother from the rest of the parent room at the mall, so the very fact that the incident happened at all is because the complainer could not keep control of her child and tell them to mind their own business.
"There's a public ignorance and there's still a lack of knowledge around breastfeeding and how it works,'' she said.

Man, just how do people get this effing stupid?
This was a perfect chance to teach the child about how a mommy takes care of her baby. What a concept!
Another question: why did the cop not exercise discretion in handling a case that was ultimately reported by a small child who probably had no idea what they were looking at?
I'll tell you why: in this modern age, it's considered judgmental to call people idiots for behaving like this, which never gets them to behave the way they ought to behave.
I don't see the problem here. She wasn't doing it out in the open, like a lot of the La Leche league chicks do that I'd just as soon not watch. She was doing it in private, in a private room. If anything, the little cur should be disciplined for violating someone else's privacy.
Also, this chick only pumps once per day?! I shudder to think how swollen those mammaries get. If she doesn't watch it, her milk will stop.
"her complaint is baseless because the police discovered that no offense had been committed"
Exactly
This is a perfect reason why women shouldn't be permitted to vote. They just have too much drive to interfere in everyone else's business.
Gaahhh! I'm starting to be embarrassed to be an Aussie, since this kind of thing has been hugely increasing over here in recent years. We're becoming almost as imbecilic PC as in the UK, and that's saying something.
Well, here's a suggestion. Deport most of your British expats, and declare the United Kingdom to now be Australia's penal colony.
I can just see a judge saying: "For the offense of buggering a koala, I sentence you to 20 years of civilian life in the United Kingdom!"
Mike, I'll pay that one. Hehe.
I, for one, would rather have to pay off two mortgages worth of fines at once than have to live 20 years of my life in the United Kingdom

Well-said.
Perhaps I read the article wrong, but it seems to me like the lactating woman was in a room designed with breastfeeding in mind. If so, the complaints aren't just stupid, they're mindbogglingly stupid.
I'll tell you why: in this modern age, it's considered judgmental to call people idiots for behaving like this, which never gets them to behave the way they ought to behave.
And as we all know, we mustn't judge anybody. Ever. (I partially blame the church for this destructive way of thinking.)

There you go again! You are a bigot for judging! Altho, I think since you are judging the church you get a free pass on it this time.
