Hypocrisy, not irony

Despite being someone who appears to be a good wife and mother, Sarah Palin has been getting ripped to shreds by certain groups because her teenage daughter is pregnant, and some have suggested that she was pregnant when she got married. Somehow this is supposed to show that she's a hypocrite on family values issues, despite the fact that among other things, she chose to keep a baby with Downs Syndrome on principle. The incongruence between her principles and actions, and the actions of her daughter, are supposed to make her into some sort of hypocrite who has no standing.

Most of her critics would probably respond that it's some asinine form of irony (a convenient list of definitions), that they're just giving her a taste of her own medicine that they would normally not dish out. However, there is nothing ironic about that--that's textbook hypocrisy in action.

**UPDATE**: Don Surber has a funny take on this issue:

You can be an unrepentant terrorist.

You can be a perjurer.

You can be an ex-klansman (Exalted Cyclops at that).

But Lord help you if you are a conservative and you run a stop sign.

Conservatives are held to a different standard. Look at Trent Lott who resigned after making comments. Then look at Detroit Mayer Kwame Kilpatrick. It is ridiculous what they are doing to Sarah Palin.
