"First, it alienated its traditional base."
Yup. I don't think the republicans will get very far by alienating those who want smaller government (freedom) and by continually teeing off the social cons (who were so-easily baited back into the fold by a selection of a religious feminist--a contratiction in terms if I ever heard one--in the form of Pailn). Talk about Lucy with the football...
"it demolished its credibility and alleged principles with undecided voters through a combination of failing to lead according to conservative principles, and corruption."
They tried very hard to lead like democrats. No surprise the the dems out-democratted them. The lesson from 1994 is that (some) people want freedom...and that' the base that Republicans should target.
Unfortunately they may lose some religious cons in the process...they're just as statist as the secular humanist liberals.
"Obama to do business as usual, while adding more on in other areas."
For Olivia: biznez as usual includes more government, more state control, more tax-and-spend. And he'll get it because he doesn't have a divided government like Reagan and Clinton did.
"Oh, gimme a break. "Most voters" don't want conservatism and libertarianism. Where'd you get that? It worked for the Right once. Might not be so easy next time..."
Olivia's hopefully wrong on the former, and correct on the latter two. I see about half of the electorate wanting a guilded cage. I'm pessimistic about any sort of plurality of the voters wanting liberty.
Olivia is one of those liberals that cannot accept the fact that Obama will not make major changes to the way that things are done that will undo the damage done by the Republicans. The only way to get around what has been done would be to repeal the prescription plan, the farm subsidies, and get us out of Iraq at the very least. The fact that he has not talked about repealing any of these bills, and talks about adding more of his own is the sort of thing that she just can't seem to understand will be what will hurt our economy even more. Once he takes over in January, if he doesn't do anything about what's already been done, whatever happens from there is definitely on his head.
