You're dreaming. The Repubs couldn't even get rid of the department of education. Hell they doubled its size under Bush. They had the power to strangle it and the national endowment fo rthe arts, two easy wins and they did nothing.
I know that it's not going to happen. That's irony of it. The Republicans had a chance to smash several major bureaucracies that are loathed by a variety of political factions, but chose the option that would only further marginalize them.
It is a nice fantasy. As Roci said, ain't gonna happen. Too many people beholden to the status quo. There's a constituency built up that needs these "services" now.
They wouldn't even overturn that stupid low-flow shower law or 1.6 gallon per flush standard. Does ANYONE like or benefit from these stupid laws?
It is all the same party, Republican and Democrat, the only way Washington could get it's credibility back is if it sank into the ocean and disapeared along with Altantis.
The republicans had a perfectly good killer issue for the past three elections and did nothing. Immigration. 80% of americans think illegal immigration is out of control and needs swift government action to curb it. Unlike everything else being talked about, this is actually a federal issue and part of the constitutional role of government. But they wouldn't touch it except to undermoine what 80% of Americans said they wanted.
That's why I say that Karl Rove was either a Democrat plant or dumber than a box of bricks because he helped willfully steer the Bush Administration into a head-on collision with the popular sentiment on an issue where the Republicans should have been able to trounce the Democrats. Bush, Rove and McCain truly screwed the Republican Party on that issue, and the fact that the House Republicans did nothing to fight back is proof to me that the Republicans are simply not very serious about winning. I like posting this like this post simply to remind conservatives who say "we lost on the issues" or "it's hard to fight the Democrats" that a few strategic moves on the part of the Republicans would have gained them a lot of credibility with the electorate and would have been very easy to implement when they had the majority.
