Taking a break

June 22, 2009 Mike 15 comments
I've been blogging for about 7 years now (3 domains total...) and honestly it's getting a little old these days. In fact, for the last week, I've come close to shutting it down completely a few times. I'm not saying that I am quitting, but I am going to be taking a break for about a month or so, and see if it still is a good fit for me. Honestly, I just don't know if it is. If I do come back for real, it'll probably be on a less frequent, but more substantial basis, and focus more on programming and religion than anything else.

For a while now, I've skated on a thin edge with this at times, and lately I've found it to be getting disruptive to my "offline life." It's time to put it away, pray over it, and see if it's a childish thing or not. I have a feeling that in its current incarnation, it's the former.

Comments are still open, and I'll be monitoring them from my gmail account (and checking out feeds from Google Reader), but that's about it for at least a month.

Yeah, I know. The Internet is going to shut down without me creating new ways to blow bandwidth over HTTP, right?...

As one who recently shut down his own blog, I understand completely.

    See you after a while.

Hang in there, Mike. I enjoy your posts, and I would like to continue to do so. :)

    Enjoy the break!

Triton, I had someone email me a while back about your blog and its mysterious disappearance; I explained that the "real world" was calling, and you had other things to do. I can forward it to you if you're interested.

How's the world treating you, anyway?

Wow 7 years. I feel the way you do and have only been doing this for half the time.

Have a good break and enjoy the summer.

Don't be too quik to take them down. I did that with Cheap Seats. No I had to start up a new one. Of course, I didn't have my own like you do. You have a lot of good things to say. Rest, Grasshopper, and re-charge.

I gave up my blog about 2 years ago for pretty much the same reasons. I've missed it on occasion but overall it was a good decision for me. Do as the Spirit leads, and I'll see you back here if you choose to come back.

    Peace.

The world sucks, Feral, as it always has.  I persevere as best I can.  But the blogosphere had become an additional burden, so I scaled back my presence a bit.

I'm pretty stingy with my email address, so if you don't mind, could you blog about it or something?  I'll respond there to the emailer in question.

Will def miss your blog should you cut it. I don't blog much as I can't let it cut too much into life. Maybe when you come back you can post as you feel it and not because you feel that you have to.

    Anyways, wish you well!

I definitely support taking a break when it becomes a burden rather than an outlet for stress. I'll hope you feel like returning later, though!

Sure thing; I'll post something soon.

7 years?  Wow, quite some time to keep that kind of thing up. I had considered it at one time myself, but I consider my blog a ministry extension, so reather than giving it up I just started posting when the Spirit led. Most importently you should do what He wills you to do and if that is leave the blog world then He will make it clear to you.

I really should double-check my spelling and grammar.

Yay for Sumer Vacation!!  Go make a splash in reality instead of virtuality. Hit the beach or go sailing.

When you no longer enjoy it, or you are getting flak from "homestead 6", you prolly should dial back a bit.

Would miss ya if you take a breather, but a fellow's gotta have his priorities.  Chief among those would be spousal units and kids.  We, your blogospheric friends, do not and should not rank with your family.

Personally, I've been tapped out lately with visitation and work-related travel and continuing ed classes, so for reasons of domestic tranquility and discharging other responsibilities, God-given and otherwise, I've been increasing the interval between posts.

Hope you keep posting, but would understand if not.

Believe me, it's good.  It's real f'ing good.  I miss it a bit.  It keeps the mind engaged and keeps your written talents honed.  But frankly good news is no news. And reading the inch-by-inch sliding of society over the cliff is quite depressing.

Something else you'll find if you blog over the course of a few years is that with just a touch of web-based research, you can end up months and literally years ahead of the Legacy Media.

Past a point, you just end up feeling like you're repeating the same message over and over.  It's good to wash your hands of it and come up for air.

I really enjoy your stuff, Mike.

Hope you hang in there.  Even if you only post once a month, that's still cool!
